Margielyn Didal, Philippine’s women’s skateboarding contender, qualified for the finals after finishing 7th in the preliminary round of the women’s street skateboarding event at the Tokyo Olympics, edging out 13 other countries Monday, July 26, 2021, at the Ariake Urban Sports Park, Tokyo.

Didal finished in third place with a total of 12.02 points after her heat.

Joining Didal was Hayley Wilson from Australia, Julia Brueckler from Austria, Roos Zwetsloot from the Netherlands, and Aori Nishimura from Japan for the start list of heat 2.

Didal fell a few times during the preliminary rounds, but she got up with a smile on her face that won the audience’s hearts.

Didal was spotted limping after her preliminary falls, yet she still managed to continue with her Olympic journey.

The gesture drew the attention of the Tokyo Olympics organizers, who praised Didal’s sportsmanship even though she did not win a medal.

“This will be known as the “Margielyn Didal seal approval,” the Tokyo Olympics said, along with a picture of Didal smiling with her thumb up after a fall.

In the finals, Didal received 7.52 points. With a score of 2.33 on her first run, 2.22 on her second run, and 2.97 in the trick category, she placed seventh in the Games’ final round.

Bagging the Olympic Medals are the thirteen-year-old named Momiji Nishiya from Japan, with 15.26 points (Gold medalist), Rayssa Leal from Brazil, with 14.64 points (Silver medalist), and sixteen-year-old Funa Nakayama also from Japan, with 14.49 points (Bronze medalist).

Only the top 8 countries from the 20 contenders advanced to the finals of the Women’s Street Skateboarding event of the Olympics.
