In India, a man sleeps for 300 days a year due to a rare condition.

Pukharam, a 42-year-old from Nagaur, Rajasthan, who sleeps 20-25 days, or 300 hours in a year, suffers from a rare condition called Axis hypersomnia.

He was diagnosed with this rare disorder when he was 23 years old.

In the early days of his condition, he was sleeping for 15 hours a day. However, as time passes by, the number of hours gradually increases and affects his daily routine.

While experts recommend people to sleep for 6-8 hours a day, Pukharam can sleep for 25 days straight.

Since then, he wasn’t able to do things normally, so for him to be fed and bathed regularly, his family assists him with his needs even when he sleeps.

He even owns a quaint grocery shop that opens to the villagers but due to his condition, it only opens for villagers for only 5 days a month.

Purkharam’s wife Lichmi Devi and his mother Kanvari Devi remain hopeful and continue to seek medical assistance to free him from not living normally.

He was now dubbed as the real-life “Kumbhkarna” the mythological character from Ramayan, famous for sleeping for six months straight.

Axis hypersomnia is relatively the opposite of insomnia, a rare disease that refers to the condition of sleeping excessive amounts, including sleeping during the daytime.

People with hypersomnia have difficulty functioning during the day because they’re frequently tired, which can affect concentration and energy levels.

Hypersomnia treatments may vary depending on the condition, but experts suggest that behavioral therapy and medications can help ease the condition.

Hypersomnia may not be a life-threatening condition but can impact a person’s quality of life.
