The province of La Union and the municipality of Bacnotan are set to host the Region 1 (Ilocos) Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet from March 10 to 15, welcoming 10,000 student-athletes from the four provinces of the region.

In a forum on Monday, Darius Nieto, Project Development Officer of the Department of Education (DepEd) Ilocos Region’s Education Support Services Division, said the main competitions will be held at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in San Fernando City, Bacnotan, and Dagupan City, Pangasinan.

Meanwhile, the towns of Bangar, Luna, Balaoan, and San Juan will serve as billeting areas.

“We are ready,” Nieto assured, noting venues are strategically located near hospitals with emergency response teams on standby.

The Ilocos Police Regional Office has also pledged security for all participants.

Athletes will compete in 23 sports, including basketball, chess, dance, football, and gymnastics.

Winners from the R1AA will compete in the Palarong Pambansa. (PNA)
