Several indigent families from Barangays 42 and 45 of Pasay and Barangay 745 of Manila Cities showcased their creativity in a friendly community cook-off.

The main challenge for the cook-off was to recreate Meaty Potato Green Beans, with only a provided budget of P200 each, a recipe featured in Paghilom sa Pagkain a book distributed to the disadvantaged communities.

Authored and compiled by registered nutritionist-dietitian Dr. Teddy Manansala, the book was reprinted as a new edition by Tulong Lasalyano, a non-government organization that strives to improve children’s living conditions. It was imparted to the families through a program organized by the De La Salle Philippines in collaboration with De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Center for Social Action (CSA).

The recipients likewise underwent a two-day seminar on basic hygiene practices and cooking methodologies facilitated by CSA Community Service Adviser, registered nutritionist-dietitian and School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management educator Athena Tiglao.

Among the challengers, Erma Gongora from Barangay 42 Pasay City was hailed as the top winner. She elevated the Meaty Potato Green Beans into a healthy and refreshing serving of Lumpiang Sariwa (fresh spring rolls).

Ely Dacillo of Barangay 745 Manila and Emma Macapañas of Barangay 42 Pasay City finished Second and Third places, respectively.

The winners received cash prices, COVID Care kits, as well as certificates.

The entries were screened by a panel of judges headlined by Manansala and Tiglao, together with Benildean Parents in Action (Be-PIA) President Adora Rosales and Tulong Lasalyano-Hunger to Hope Program Manager Jian Tan.

The event was conducted with the support of the De La Salle Brothers, Inc. and the Be-PIA through Tulong Lasalyano.

The cook-off was held at the Benilde Covered Court in Malate, Manila, styled by Architecture Program faculty member Architect Jojo Guitierrez together with student-artists Tracy Aquino and Jay Regencia.
