The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples-Davao Region (NCIP-11) reminded IP communities in this province to properly manage their wealth and ancestral domains for the future generations.
In his speech for the Al’law ng Kalumonan (Indigenous Peoples Day) on Tuesday, NCIP-11 Regional Director Geroncio Aguio said the agency is tracking the direction of IP wealth management alongside strengthening communities.
“Some are still focused on the four bundles of rights under the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA). But we are now in the direction of IP wealth — it is important to manage it properly,” he said.
Aguio noted that while IPs hold ancestral domains, they were never considered rich.
“Because of the IPRA Law, we strive hard to manage our wealth properly and improve it,” he said, citing gold as the province’s highest-value mineral resource.
He underscored that good governance is essential, backed by transparency and accountability.
“Lack of transparency and accountability can cause chaos,” Aguio warned.
Mayor Myrill Apit called for unity among IP communities, stressing that no sector should be left behind in the municipality.
“Let us talk, let us listen, let us work together. Our differences need not be a cause for division. You are an integral part of Mawab, part of our history, culture and future,” she said.
Apit encouraged stronger partnerships between IP communities and the local government.
“If there are concerns, let us discuss them. If there are questions, let us answer them. If there are messages to convey, let us listen. A good relationship is built on open communication and mutual respect,” she added.
Apit also announced the allocation of 100 scholarship slots exclusively for IP students under its first-ever Municipal Scholarship Program.
She reiterated the local government’s commitment to making higher education more accessible, particularly for indigenous communities.
“I want our IP students to feel that their municipal government believes in their potential and supports their education,” she added. (PNA)
