Ilonggos are encouraged to derive inspiration from the wood snake, symbolizing wisdom and transformation, as they celebrated Saturday the 21st Chinese New Year here.

The parade on Friday night commenced under the Filipino-Chinese Friendship Arc and proceeded to the Freedom Grandstand for the grand cultural presentation, providing a larger amd more comfortable venue.

“The wood snake represents wisdom, transformation and harmony. Traits that inspire us as we step into new beginnings. Let us use this year to thrive, adapt and embrace the transformative power of change as we forge new partnerships and success together,” Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. president Allan Ryan Tan said in his message.

Fr. Joseph Raymund Patrick Sanchez, president of Ateneo de Iloilo-Santa Maria Catholic School and host of this year’s celebration, said the event was meant not only to celebrate the richness of the Chinese heritage but also to reflect on the deeper meaning of this year’s theme: “Providence: Grace, Gratitude, and Growth.”

“Providence reminds us that every blessing we receive, like success in business, harmony in the family, and other opportunities we enjoy, is a gift of providence. When we recognize and embrace this truth, we will hopefully respond with gratitude, which flows true growth. We grow and prosper not just in wealth but in wisdom, kindness, and loving service to our neighbor,” he said.

Mayor Jerry Treñas also credited the strong partnership between the Filipino-Chinese community and Ilonggos that result in the creation of jobs.

During the same event, the Federation Iloilo Volunteer Fire Brigade was awarded the Hall of Fame, while singer and songwriter Jose Mari Chan was conferred the title Distinguished Son of Iloilo. (PNA)
