The Iloilo provincial government is set to release PHP43 million to support municipalities and barangays in establishing hazardous heat index evacuation centers.

In a press conference Friday, Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. underscored the urgency of these centers to protect vulnerable groups from extreme heat.

He said local officials are already discussing implementation.

Guidelines for assistance are still being finalized, but municipalities and barangays must prepare facilities and provide counterpart funding, he added.

The initiative was inspired by Bingawan town, which opened its air-conditioned gymnasium for senior citizens during extreme heat. Defensor aims to expand this concept to barangays.

The provincial government will provide PHP100,000 per municipality and PHP25,000 per barangay, utilizing funds from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Governor’s Office.

Defensor also urged adherence to the 3Is: Iwas sa init (avoid direct sunlight), Inom ng tubig (stay hydrated), and Iwas sa makapal na damit (wear light clothing). (PNA)
