The city government is rolling out programs aimed at strengthening sports development, Mayor Raisa Treñas said Monday.

Treñas gave the assurance as she led the awarding of cash incentives to 64 Iloilo City athletes who won medals at the 2026 Palarong Pambansa during the regular flag-raising ceremony.

“We are developing programs, and we are making sure that we are supporting our children, especially in sports,” Treñas said. “We are developing La Paz Plaza, and we are planning a 1,500-seat gymnasium to provide a venue for practice.”

She added the city-owned YMCA building will also be developed into a venue for free swimming training.

Under the city’s incentive scheme, gold medalists received PHP7,000 per medal, silver medalists PHP5,000 and bronze medalists PHP3,000. Coaches and assistant coaches each received PHP2,000.

Iloilo City athletes, part of the Western Visayas delegation, brought home 11 gold, 16 silver and 37 bronze medals at the national games. (PNA)
