Candidates vying for various positions here were called upon to ensure a peaceful election and uphold the city’s reputation as the “City of Love” during the signing of the covenant for the 2025 national and local polls on Thursday.

Interior and Local Government Director for Iloilo City Oscar Lim underscored the significance of maintaining order during the elections, stressing that political unrest could discourage investors and impact economic growth.

“It means lesser income for the city, and the implementation of projects will be affected,” Lim said as he reminded all candidates to play fair and safe.

“Whatever will be the result of the election, remember you are all from Iloilo City.”

Meanwhile, Election Officer IV, lawyer Pinky Jevini Tentativa, urged candidates to genuinely commit to serving the public after reciting their pledge and signing the covenant.

“May you be beacons of hope in rebuilding this country by protecting the rights and interests of the public and by adhering to the rules on campaigning, the voting procedure, and religious filing of statements of contributions and expenditures at the conclusion of the election period,” Tentativa said.

Msgr. Meliton Oso, representing the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting and Archbishop Jose Romeo Lazo, challenged candidates to “declare war against vote buying and selling founded on political dynasties.”

“Our gathering is a sign of hope in this Jubilee of Hope; that we are not giving up against vote buying and selling founded on political dynasties. That the spirit of making this year’s election clean, honest, accurate, meaningful, and peaceful is very much alive. Together, let us keep the torch of peaceful elections forever burning,” he said.

The event, spearheaded by the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), began with a caravan along major roads, followed by a unity walk from Sunburst Park to the Freedom Grandstand.

ICPO Director Col. Kim Legada highlighted that the covenant is more than a formality —it is a solemn pledge of honor and integrity.

“This is a vow to uphold fairness, respect the law, and ensure a peaceful electoral process,” Legada said. (PNA)
