Ilocos Norte’s environment office will lead a provincewide clean-up drive this month and expand “Basura Exchange” stores to combat plastic waste.

Pollution control officer Joegie Jimenez said Tuesday the office is also preparing a “Basura Summit” to intensify solid waste management advocacy.

The exchange stores, launched in Pasuquin and Pinili towns, allow residents to trade clean plastic bottles and wrappers for points redeemable for groceries and school supplies. The program is a joint initiative with the Liga ng mga Barangay.

Jimenez said the barangay league plans to adopt the stores in more villages this year to reach more residents and make waste management a way of life.

The efforts support Zero Waste Month every January, which aims to raise awareness on reducing, reusing and recycling waste. (PNA)
