With the hit 2018 rom-com film “Crazy Rich Asians” proving to be a successful hit among filmgoers and enthusiasts, talks about a sequel based on the book novel contemporary, “China Rich Girlfriend”, are now making a buzz.
The said sequel was supposed to be filmed this year, but lots of drawbacks arose such as the original cast’s commitment issues; director Jon M Chu being busy with the musical, “In the Heights”, which aired last June; and co-writer Adele Lim leaving the production over a pay disparity.
Amid the chaos, fans took notice of Evangelista’s on-and-off stay in China for a project since the start of last year. Rumors circulated that she is bound to be cast in the film’s sequel, which she immediately denied in a tweet.
For those of you asking I am not in China to film for crazy rich 🙂 I am here for something else — can’t wait to share ?❤️

However, instead of confusing fans, it rather motivated fans to fantasize about the possible appearance.
Her Instagram post in May 2019 showed a sneak peek of a movie set, with an actor’s chair and her name inscribed on it. This fueled the fans’ curiosity even more. The post is captioned, “Back in China ? I’m missing my family terribly, but I’m so thankful to be here. ? I feel way too lucky to be chasing my dreams here to have any complains.”
Meanwhile, Kris Aquino was also in talks of reappearing in the film. According to Kevin Kwan, author of the successful trilogy, the Queen of all Media’s character was essential to empower the protagonist, Rachel Yu and will probably be invited to her wedding with Nick Young in the upcoming sequel.
“He’s been one of my really consistent WhatsApp friends, and I asked him because the opening of ‘China Rich Girlfriend’ is the wedding. So I asked him, ‘Am I going to be in the wedding? Is Princess Intan invited in the wedding?’ And he said, ‘Of course! Because you’re the one who gave her her validation in ‘Crazy Rich Asians.’ I said, ‘Oh my Gosh, hope it happens!’” she revealed in a virtual press conference.
Nonetheless, everything will remain as mere speculation, as the film is expected to be released late next year.
