To keep the spirit of Christmas alive amid the global health crisis, a group of friends in Pago village here has initiated a simple gift-giving activity for children and senior citizens.
The project dubbed “Pagorisyo”, derived from the word Pago and risyo (Waray term for joy), aims to grant the simple wishes of children up to 8 years old and give food packs to indigent seniors in the village.
Eugie Cinco, 22, one of the G-Squad members, said they started looking for sponsors as early as August to ensure that the project would come into fruition.
“Our main role is to bridge the gap between donors and beneficiaries. Individual and group partners from different parts of the world whose hearts are also shed with kindness to share their blessing by sending cash and in-kind donations,” he said in an interview on Tuesday.
With the overwhelming support from private individuals, around 200 children have received gifts and goodies, while some 22 indigent senior citizens were given food packs during the house-to-house distribution from Dec. 20-21.
“Giving in any ways we can means so much for others. Our heartfelt thanks to all who extended generous support for this project. Our little efforts of kindness put together bring a huge impact and resonate happiness to people especially this time of the year,” Cinco said.
The group launched the project in its Facebook group exclusive for Pago residents, where parents or relatives of the recipients submitted their entries by posting a picture of the kid, with its name, age, location, and his or her simple wish for Christmas.
Gifts included new toys and clothes, while the goody bags contained biscuits, chocolates, and candies, Cinco said.
Maria Lee Villero, 39, said she is grateful that her four-year-old daughter received an early Christmas present.
“We are very happy, blessed, and thankful that there are people who are always willing to share just to make these children happy amid the challenges we are now facing,” she added.
Pago is one of the most populated villages here, where the town’s two biggest resettlement sites for victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda are located. (PNA)
