The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday said 704 Filipinos abroad have contracted the highly contagious coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Of this number, 216 have recovered while at least 400 are still undergoing treatment.

“From a week of reflection in observance of the Holy Week, the DFA records 31.6-percent increase in the confirmed Covid-19 cases among our overseas Filipinos in the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, and Middle East/Africa compared to figures last week, which gives a total of 704 cases as of today,” DFA Assistant Secretary Eduardo Meñez said.

Based on DFA data, 88 Filipinos abroad have died due to Covid-19, at least 49 in the Americas, one in the Asia Pacific region, 33 in Europe, and five in Middle East/Africa.

“The DFA, through its embassies and consulates, continues to partner with local health authorities and agencies in ensuring proper implementation of preventive measures and restrictions, and remains steadfast in its commitment to attending to the needs of our kababayan affected by the Covid-19 pandemic,” Meñez said.

Latest data from the World Health Organization show that there are a total of 1,773,084 confirmed Covid-19 cases globally. (PNA)
