Young Filipino chess player Daniel Quizon successfully claimed the AQ Prime ASEAN Chess Championship title as he defeated compatriot and international master Rolando Nolte in the final round.

On February 18, Quizon outplayed Nolte as he used a pawn in the middle game and used a 57-move King’s Indian Defense.

The standings after 11 rounds revealed that Quizon finished the tournament with 7.5 points on six wins against two losses and three draws, followed by IM Paulo Bersamina of the Philippines with 7.0 points and GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia with 6.5 points.

Quizon received a total of USD 2,000 as he victoriously topped the chess competition.

The victory was actually sweeter for the 19-year-old champion, as he also obtained the second of the three norms required to finally claim a grandmaster title.

It was a dramatic yet fulfilling triumph for Quizon, who clawed his way back from the ground after absorbing shares of losses in the 11-round tournament organized by the Kamatyas Chess Club.

Nonetheless, the International Master Champion was able to prevail against the odds he encountered and played his best which led him, and the country, to the sweetest victory of all.
