The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 1 (Ilocos Region) is urging its micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to adapt and innovate to remain competitive in an evolving market environment.

During a virtual government service forum on Tuesday, DTI-1 Director Merlie Membrere highlighted the MSMEs’ crucial role in strengthening a resilient economy. She emphasized a whole-of-government approach to address such challenges as changing consumer behavior, rising costs, and global competition.

With stronger collaboration with various government agencies, as directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., to help small businesses survive and grow, Membrere said the DTI continues to provide support programs for MSMEs, including free training, mentorship, financing assistance, and digitalization initiatives.

“Let’s keep training big, and the DTI is here to assist you. Let us work together and strengthen our collaboration with various government agencies for a better economy,” she said.

In collaboration with the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE) and Go Negosyo, the DTI initiative aims to equip MSMEs with invaluable insights into government programs and services crucial to fostering business growth.

The forum likewise showcased participation from key government agencies, including the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines, Department of Labor and Employment, Small Business Corp., and Bureau of Internal Revenue.

This is part of the Kapatid Mentor ME program, first implemented in 2016, which empowers MSMEs by enhancing their entrepreneurial capacity and improving their access to mentorship, funding, and market opportunities.

In addition to a 10-module mentorship, the program offers coaching sessions to help mentees draft their Business Improvement Plans and refine their materials and presentation skills.

This year’s first batch includes 57 mentees who participated in the forum to deepen their knowledge of government services.

On the part of the DOST, senior science specialist Katrina Ronquillo said the agency is committed to helping MSMEs adopt technologies, including broadening access to financing and technical support.

“We offer various programs and services for MSMEs. We not only create technologies to make life better, but also innovate to benefit more MSMEs,” Ronquillo said, urging business owners to explore these opportunities by contacting the DOST office nearest them. (PNA)
