The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Eastern Visayas (DSWD-8) has completed the delivery of 24,767 family food packs (FFPs) worth PHP12.19 million to one city and 16 towns badly affected by Typhoon “Jolina” in Leyte and Samar provinces as of October 11.

In an update released on Wednesday, the DSWD regional office here said they have responded to all requests for food packs from local government units in the region.

“The allocation of food packs is based on the result of rapid assessment and request of local governments for FFPs augmentation in badly-hit areas,” DSWD Eastern Visayas regional information officer Abelardo Bibat said in a message sent to the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Recipient towns are Hernani, Quinapondan, Mercedes, Maydolong, Salcedo, Lawaan, and General MacArthur in Eastern Samar; Catbalogan City, Calbiga, Tagapul-an, Jiabong, Tarangnan, Santo Niño, Almagro, Zumarraga, and San Sebastian in Samar; and Burauen in Leyte.

The DSWD has been coordinating with the local government units for the distribution of these FFPs to the beneficiaries.

“Jolina” left a trail of destruction as it crossed Samar Island on September 6 and 7.

The DSWD said in its official report that the storm has killed five persons and injured another resident with 18 others still missing.

There were 273 damaged houses and 11,496 partially damaged in 36 towns in Eastern Visayas when the typhoon crossed the region.

The storm made five landfalls in Samar with the first in Hernani, Eastern Samar on the night of September 6.

It also made landfalls in the towns of Daram, Santo Niño, Almagro, and Tagapul-an, Samar.

Bibat said there are no requests for food packs due to Tropical Storm Maring since the region experienced its usual “normal rains”. (PNA)
