Over 100 researchers whose works were published in refereed (peer-reviewed) scientific journals, and technology developers who register their work with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), will receive up to PHP100,000 incentive from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

During an awarding ceremony in Muntinlupa City Thursday, DOST Undersecretary Maridon Sahagun said the incentive seeks to encourage DOST researchers to design equipment and develop notable inventions.

It is also a call for them to translate their research into tangible solutions that would benefit the people, especially the marginalized and the underserved, she added.

According to the DOST, 144 international publications, five granted patents, and 10 utility models from its various attached agencies were chosen to receive the incentive via the Intellectual Property Awards.

In a Viber message to the Philippine News Agency, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said the awardees should have published their research outputs in Web of Science/Clarivate Analytics or Scopus indexed journals in the last three years before the year of the nomination.

The DOST Granted Patent and Utility Model Registration Awards are given in recognition of the efforts of DOST technology developers whose technologies have been granted patent or utility model registration in the last three years preceding the award, he said.

The DOST Industrial Design Awards, on the other hand, are given in recognition of the efforts of DOST industrial designers whose designs have been filed for industrial design registration in the last four years preceding the award, Solidum added.

Cash incentive for the published paper is up to PHP100,000; granted patents PHP80,000; and PHP15,000 for registered utility models.

According to the DOST, its attached agency with the highest number of publications and utility model registrations will also receive a PHP50,000 cash incentive. (PNA)
