The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Education (DepEd) in Eastern Visayas will pilot a digital learning system in two public schools to enhance classroom instruction and provide teachers and learners with additional technology-based learning opportunities.

The two agencies signed a memorandum of agreement Thursday for the pilot implementation of the Enhancing Teachers’ Unimpeded Rational Objectives Digital Learning System (e-TURO DLS) Project, a 12-month project that will run from August 2026 to July 2027.

The pilot sites are the Sto. Niño SPED Center in Tacloban City and Guinsorongan Elementary School in Catbalogan City, Samar. The project has an approved budget of PHP2.3 million from DOST’s local Grants-in-Aid program.

DOST Eastern Visayas Regional Director John Glenn Ocaña said the funding will cover the technology subscription, hardware, internet connectivity, training and other requirements for the deployment of the system.

“This is a formal joining of hands between two institutions that share one heart: the future of the Eastern Visayas child. The DOST is committed to bringing science, technology and innovation closer to learners across the region, particularly in areas where access to opportunities may be limited,” Ocaña said.

Under the agreement, DOST will facilitate the provision of hardware, including laptop computers and smart televisions, internet connectivity, server support and capacity-building activities for teachers, school information and technology (ICT) coordinators and administrators.

DepEd Eastern Visayas, meanwhile, will integrate the e-TURO DLS into classroom instruction at the two pilot schools. It will designate teachers, ICT coordinators, and focal persons who will undergo training and oversee the day-to-day use of the system.

“With its AI-enhanced digital learning platform, Project E-TURO will initially support Grade 2 learners in identified pilot schools, providing opportunities to complement classroom instruction through innovative and technology-enabled learning experiences,” said DepEd Regional Director Salustiano Jimenez.

DepEd will also ensure that its implementation aligns with the K–12 curriculum and learning standards, while providing the classroom space and facilities needed for the equipment.

The project is scheduled to move into school orientation and capacity-building activities in September, followed by the pilot implementation from September 2026 to July 2027.

The project combines a learning management system, a vast digital content library and AI-based content creation to improve student learning and teacher efficiency. (PNA)
