As the August 22 start of the face-to-face classes nears, Dinagat Islands Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. has ordered the fast-tracking of vaccination in the province to protect children from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

“We will find a means to accelerate our vaccination efforts for the protection of our residents and the children from Covid-19,” Demerey said during a meeting with the top officials of the Department of Education in the province Wednesday (July 13, 2022).

Data provided by the Provincial Health Office in the province indicated that as of June 15, a total of 63,406 individuals in the province are already fully vaccinated.

Among the municipalities in the province, San Jose topped with the most number of fully vaccinated residents as of the period with 12,945; followed by Basilisa with 11,220; Libjo with 10,845; Cagdianao with 10,802; and Dinagat with 6,338.

A total of 6,196 individuals in Loreto town are also fully vaccinated as of June 15; 4,975 in Tubajon; and 85 more individuals who were recorded at the PHO.

The total number of fully vaccinated residents represents 59 percent of the 80 percent target number for vaccination in the province.

A total of 144,151 Covid-19 vaccines have already been administered in the province as of June 15, the PHO data showed.

During the meeting with DepEd officials, Demerey also assured the education sector of the provincial government’s full support, especially on their needs.

“We also want to make our students in Dinagat excel in every subject and become competitive in competitions from the regional up to the national levels,” the governor said.

Data from the Department of Education in the Caraga Region (DepEd-13) said that 1,781 public schools in the area were involved in the progressive face-to-face classes as of July 4 this year.

Of the total number, 139 public schools in Dinagat Islands were directly involved in face-to-face classes during the period.

The number represents 98 percent of the total number of public schools in the province, the DepEd-13 data showed. (PNA)
