The Department of Education (DepEd) has released the interim guidelines on assessment and grading learners in light of the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan for the academic year 2020 to 2021 which opens Monday.

In its official Facebook page on Sunday, the DepEd said the guidelines or Department Order 31, series of 2020, aims to provide teachers the guidance on the assessment of student learning and on grading schemes to be adopted this school year.

The department said the assessment “should be holistic and authentic in capturing the attainment of the most essential learning competencies and is integral for understanding student learning and development”.

“A variety of assessment strategies is necessary, with formative assessment taking priority to inform teaching and promote growth and mastery. Assessment and feedback should be a shared responsibility among teachers, learners and their families,” the DepEd said.

It added the assessment and grading should have a positive impact on learning.

Under the guidelines, the DepEd presented the weight distribution of the summative assessment components per learning area for grades 1 to 10 and for senior high school.

It also presented a sample computation of written works and performance tasks for the different subjects — language, math, science, history, music, arts, physical education, and technical and livelihood education. (PNA)
