The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have partnered to enhance the entrepreneurial skills of some 8,000 learners and teachers in 31 farm schools across Western Visayas.

“We have the products, we have the resources, but we need technical assistance from a government agency that is in charge of building and enhancing skills, especially on how to operate an income-generating project,” said DepEd regional information officer Hernani Escullar Jr., in an interview on Monday.

Following the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on March 26, Escullar said DTI will provide technical and training support and market linkages through its Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) – You Can Be Your Own Boss (BYOB).

“They will be the ones to formulate a mentor network for business guidance for our participants,” he said, adding that they intend to develop a financial management manual for farm schools.

DepEd has already equipped the farm school participants with skills in land cultivation and product processing.

However, the partnership with DTI seeks to go further by helping learners generate income that could support their education and benefit their families.

After the MOA signing between DepEd Regional Director Ramir Uytico and DTI Regional Director Rachel Nufable, a series of meetings would be held with school heads from the 31 farm schools.

DTI staff would also conduct on-site immersions to understand the current situation and assess the business models in place.

The region has had 31 farm schools since DepEd offered the curriculum to Grade 7 learners four years ago.

The bulk is in Negros Occidental with 21 farm schools, and the rest are in Panay and Guimaras.

“We continue to call for more schools that are willing to convert to farm schools because we will be happy to provide all necessary interventions,” said the regional information officer. (PNA)
