The Department of Education (DepEd) Dumaguete City Schools Division is gearing up for the implementation of the trimester system for the academic year 2026-2027, an official said on Wednesday.

Dr. Juditha Mapue, DepEd city division assistant superintendent, told the Philippine News Agency in an interview that the trimester system means dividing the school days from the previous four quarters into three terms.

“This will reduce teacher fatigue and enhance the learning competencies of our students,” Mapue said.

The training for teachers in preparation for the trimester will begin after the Holy Week observance next week.

Modules and other learning materials are also prepared before classes begin sometime in the middle of June this year.

Mapue said the school year will now revert to its original schedule, with classes starting in June.

A few years ago, the Philippines’ school year opening was shifted from June to August to align with international academic calendars, but this caused a lot of disruptions in learning, she said.

Meanwhile, Mapue said the graduation ceremonies for public schools will be held simultaneously on March 30 and 31.

She said the agency has to maximize its school calendar so it can have a smooth transition to a new school opening by mid-June. (PNA)
