Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Antique Superintendent Dr. Ernesto Servillon Jr. is seeking community support for the implementation of a literacy project in the province.

Servillon, who assumed post on Monday, said the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), barangay officials and other members of the community are a big help for the “Kasimaryo ko, Tudluan Ko” (My Neighbor, I will Mentor), directed to learners having difficulty in literacy and numeracy.

“There are learners whose parents also do not know how to read, write, and count. They could be assisted through the community literacy project,” he said in an interview on Tuesday.

SK members will be trained to assist the Alternative Learning School teachers in conducting the remedial lessons, while barangay officials will help identify the learners, he said.

Servillon said the project was proven effective in improving the performance of learners in his previous assignment in Iloilo, and he would like to have it replicated in Antique.

Meanwhile, he will have a tarpaulin posted in every school, bearing his contact number, for parents and the community folks to contact him for their concerns and complaints.

“They could inform me about their concerns with DepEd Antique,” he said.
