The Department of Agriculture-Davao (DA-11) urged farmers whose insured crops were damaged by El NiƱo to immediately coordinate with the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) and their Municipal Agriculture Offices (MAOs) to report losses and start the claims process.

In a video interview posted on Agri Info Davao Facebook over the weekend, DA-11 Regional Director Macario Gonzaga said timely reporting is crucial to expedite the validation and processing of insurance claims.

“Farmers are advised to prepare the necessary documents, including insurance policies or proof of coverage, farm and crop details and evidence of damage,” Gonzaga said.

He reminded farmers not to clear or dispose of damaged crops before the required assessment to facilitate proper validation by the PCIC.

Gonzaga clarified that PCIC indemnity payments are separate from other government emergency financial assistance programs, stressing that cash aid cannot be guaranteed without official approval.

As part of measures to help farmers manage planting risks, DA-11 continues to promote the use of quality seeds, suitable rice and corn varieties, organic fertilizers, biofertilizers and soil conditioners, based on recommendations from agricultural technicians.

Gonzaga likewise advised farmers to avoid reporting delays, keep their documents secure, and maintain regular coordination with their MAOs and the PCIC to monitor the status of their claims.

Meanwhile, DA-11 is implementing a PHP729-million El NiƱo Action Plan to protect food security and agricultural livelihoods in the region as farm losses from moisture stress and prolonged dry spells continue to rise.

Gonzaga said the strategy focuses on three priority areas: sustaining crop production in low-risk areas, salvaging affected crops and preparing the agriculture sector for potentially worsening drought conditions.

“Our goal is not only to minimize damage but also to protect the livelihoods of our farmers and ensure a continuous food supply in the region,” he said.

Of the total allocation, PHP678 million will expand production in less vulnerable areas, PHP40 million will cover preparations and logistics, and PHP9.9 million will support immediate efforts to save crops in affected areas. (PNA)
