With just 20 days to go before Christmas Day and parties are being held left and right, the Department of Health (DOH)-5 (Bicol) has urged the public to choose healthy food and to buy safe and age-appropriate toys as gifts for children.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Arlene Riario, National Nutrition Council (NNC) regional program coordinator, said maintaining healthy eating habits during the holidays can be challenging with all the tempting treats and indulgent meals.

“It’s possible to balance enjoying festive foods and being mindful of our health. We have tips for healthy eating during this holiday season,” Riario said.

She said planning and prioritizing meals and snacks ahead of time can help avoid impulsive choices.

“Prioritize nutritious foods, such as vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and whole grains. Be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overeating. Limit sugary drinks and alcohol, and opt for water, herbal tea or infused water instead,” she added.

Reario said that when attending parties, it is good to pay attention to what one eats and to savor each bite.

“Scan the buffet before loading your plate and choose healthier options, limit intake of high-calorie, high-fat and high-sugar foods. Be selective with treats, enjoy holiday treats but be selective,” she said.

Reario said while enjoying the holidays, people must incorporate physical activities into their daily routine to avoid diseases.

Meanwhile, DOH-Bicol also defined a safe toy as “one that is suitable to the child’s physical capabilities and mental and social development, is appealing and interesting, well-constructed, durable and safe for the child’s age.”

“Parents must ensure that their children play with toys suited for their age and with adult supervision,” a statement from the agency said.

DOH also reminded the public to dispose of plastic packaging accordingly and to keep it out of the reach of children. (PNA)
