The Chinese Embassy in Manila on Tuesday donated 2,000 Huawei tablets to the Department of Education (DepEd) to assist Filipino students and support the blended distance learning system in the country.

Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian turned over the tablets to Education Secretary Leonor Briones, who was joined by Presidential Assistant on Foreign Affairs and Chief of Presidential Protocol Robert Eric Borje and DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan in Malacañang.

Huang said the donation is “intended to help the Philippine students to overcome difficulties and to get better access to distance learning resources amid the pandemic.”

He said the embassy would continue supporting “the education endeavor of the Philippines to the best of its ability, and further implement the Chinese Government Scholarship and Chinese Ambassador Scholarship projects.”

The tablets will be distributed to schools located in geographically isolated, disadvantaged and conflict-affected areas, according to the embassy.

Aside from support in the education sector, China has previously provided livelihood and medical supplies to the Philippines, including 150 sets of high-flow humidifiers, 130 ventilators, 252,000 test kits, and over 1.8 million pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Some Chinese local government agencies as well as enterprises and civil groups also donated nearly 10 million pieces of PPE and other medical supplies to the country, the embassy said. (PNA)
