More farmers in this town are being enticed to raise cattle following an animal dispersal program initiated by the local government to promote beef cattle production.
Mayor Crescente Garcia confirmed this on Wednesday after leading the distribution of at least 20 improved female cattle to different Zanjera (farmers’ organizations) in the town.
“The program is funded through the general fund of the local government unit. It aims to provide additional livelihood to our farmers and promote food security,” Garcia said, urging farmer-recipients to take good care of the animals and let them multiply.
Under the livestock dispersal program, breeder cattle are distributed to small farmers. The offspring produced will then be turned over to other farmer-recipients, creating a sustainable cycle.
Aside from increasing farmers’ income, the initiative also teaches them to convert animal waste into organic fertilizers and enhance food security.
Before the cattle turnover, beneficiaries were trained in livestock raising to ensure they are capable of raising the animals.
“Our heartfelt thanks to our Mayor Garcia and our municipal agriculturist Cheryl Rugian for their continuous support, guidance, and commitment to empowering local farmers,” said Precious Jamorabon, one of the cattle beneficiaries.
The Philippine Statistics Authority reported positive growth in cattle production in Ilocos Norte in 2025, with 6,938 metric tons accounting for 29.7 percent of Ilocos Region’s 23,375 metric tons estimated volume. (PNA)
