The city government of Borongan in Eastern Samar has started the flood control project using the PHP118 million People’s Survival Fund (PSF) approved over a year ago.
Dubbed “Reinforcement of Lo-om River Flood Protection System and Redevelopment for Resilient Communities and Livelihood,” the project seeks to protect its surrounding communities from floods and “support their livelihood needs as a means to obtain collective resilience.”
Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda, in a statement on Thursday, thanked the PSF for recognizing the project’s value and projected impacts on the local community.
“Prior to its approval, the project underwent a series of assiduous assessment and revision processes by the PSF Board and its member agencies, ensuring its adherence to the climate-responsive standards set by the PSF,” he said.
The project is set to fortify flood control measures along the Lo-om River and support reforestation efforts in the area.
Approved in October 2023, the project focuses on four key aspects of climate resilience: reforestation, disaster risk reduction, livelihood capacitation, and infrastructure.
The PSF was established under Republic Act 10174, extending funds to local government units for their implementation of climate change adaptation projects.
As a financial grant for vulnerable communities dealing with the impacts of climate change, the PSF ensures that the recipients of their grant concur with their standards on organizational independence, field expertise, financial management, and participatory practices. (PNA)
