The Bureau of Fire Protection in Bicol (BFP-5) has deployed a specialized rescue team, including K-9 assets, to provide immediate assistance to the victims of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu and nearby provinces on Tuesday night.

In an interview on Thursday, BFP-5 Regional Director Sr. Supt. Achilles Santiago said the team consists of 11 BFP personnel, 10 K-9 assets, and two personnel transport vehicles.

“The mobilization underscores the BFP’s commitment to public safety and disaster response. Equipped with specialized skills in Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) and supported by highly trained K-9 assets, our responders are prepared to conduct Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) operations,” he said.

Santiago emphasized that their role is crucial not only for locating survivors and saving lives but also for providing reassurance and hope to families affected by the earthquake and the threat of aftershocks.

He also reminded the team to prioritize their safety during the humanitarian mission.

“Always adhere to the buddy system from the start of your operational period. Pray that God keeps us safe and protected. May you perform your sworn duties diligently to save lives and retrieve souls, providing families with peace of mind,” Santiago told the team.

Upon arrival, the team will head to Bogo City for a five-day operation.

BFP-5 reaffirms its commitment to stand in solidarity with every Filipino community during times of crisis, emphasizing that when lives are at stake, every second, every effort, and every responder matters. (PNA)
