The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) expects increased tuna and high-value fish catch in Northern Samar following the distribution of PHP42.7 million worth of fishing boats to local fisherfolk associations.

In a statement on Monday, BFAR said the beneficiaries recently received 62-foot fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) handline fishing boats complete with mother boats, small motorized auxiliary catcher boats, and fishing gear.

The assistance forms part of BFAR’s Tuna Development Program and Capacitating Municipal Fisherfolk Program aimed at boosting offshore fishing capabilities among small-scale fisherfolk.

The recipients include the Brgy. Talolora CFLC Fisherfolk Association in Palapag town, Mapanas Pacific Town Fisherfolk Association in Mapanas town, Lapinig Deep Sea Fishing Association in Lapinig town, and the Brgy. Mualbual Bangkulis Fisherfolk Association in Laoang town.

“Through this program, we seek to empower fisherfolk associations by enhancing their capacity for offshore fishing operations while promoting sustainable and responsible fishing practices,” BFAR Eastern Visayas Regional Director Dominador Maputol said.

Maputol said the initiative supports the government’s continuing efforts to strengthen food security, improve the socio-economic conditions of fisherfolk families, and build resilient fishing communities across the region.

BFAR projects that Northern Samar could contribute about 160 metric tons of fish annually, with an estimated production value of PHP32 million, through the efficient operation of the newly provided fishing vessels.

Located along the eastern seaboard of Eastern Visayas, Northern Samar is known for its rich fishing grounds and abundance of high-value species, particularly tuna. (PNA)
