The 2026 Palarong Pambansa opened Sunday night in Agusan del Sur, fulfilling a decades-long dream of provincial leaders and residents to bring the country’s biggest scholastic sports event to their home soil.
Governor Santiago Cane Jr. welcomed more than 14,000 athletes, coaches, officials, and guests at the Provincial Sports Complex in Barangay Patin-ay, Prosperidad, calling the hosting “the tomorrow the people of Agusan del Sur dreamed about 33 years ago.”
The ceremony was attended by Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo and Education Secretary Sonny Angara, underscoring national support for the weeklong games.
Cane traced the province’s journey to the late Democrito Plaza, former congressman and governor, who envisioned and began building the sports complex decades earlier.
“This is the fulfillment of his dream,” Cane said. “Thank you still, sir, if you are listening to us now. The Palarong Pambansa is now here in your beloved Agusan del Sur.”
The governor hailed the athletes from the country’s 18 regions as “the Stars of the Palarong Pambansa,” stressing their central role in the competition. “Without athletes, there is no Palarong Pambansa. This is dedicated to all of you,” he said.
Cane urged national and local governments to craft a sports program that ensures every Filipino athlete has a fair chance to excel, not only nationally but internationally.
“From your ranks will come the next generation of Filipino Olympians,” he told the delegates. “This is the time to prove that your hard work and years of training will bear fruit.”
He also praised the people of Agusan del Sur for their tireless preparations, saying the province embraced the responsibility with love rather than obligation.
“Farmers and teachers, tribal leaders and school children, barangay volunteers who showed up before sunrise and stayed past dark—all worked toward one idea: that when the country came to our door, we would open it wide. That is not hospitality as obligation; that is hospitality as love,” Cane said. (PNA)
