Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Negros Oriental were honored Friday for their contributions to nation-building during the observance of National Disability Rights Day, where around 300 beneficiaries also received rice assistance.

Speaking at the Negros Oriental Provincial Convention Center, Negros Oriental Gov. Manuel Sagarbarria described PWDs as an inspiration to many, citing their resilience and meaningful role in their communities.

“No matter what we are given in this world, as long as we work hard, we will always pursue or go through life even better than a normal person, despite being disadvantaged,” he said.

Sagarbarria also announced plans to launch a Governor’s Cup for PWDs starting next year to further highlight the annual celebration.

Under the proposed program, local government units (LGUs) across the province will conduct qualifying competitions featuring selected sports and games, with winners advancing to the provincial championship in Dumaguete City.

Sagarbarria said the provincial championship is expected to coincide with the completion of the rehabilitation of the Macias Sports Complex, including its oval.

As part of the celebration, the governor also distributed 5 kilograms of rice each to around 300 PWDs from different LGUs. The distribution was organized by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office.

The event also featured family fun games, free massage services, haircuts and other activities in recognition of the sector’s contributions and to mark National Disability Rights Day. (PNA)
