Locals and tourists visiting key tourism destinations in Ilocos Norte province were assured on Thursday of no rate increases for accommodations and tours amid soaring oil prices.

“We are keeping our rates the same to attract more visitors and let them enjoy on a budget,” Dennis Jacinto, one of the operators of off-road vehicles and sandboarding activities at the Talingaan River Dunes Adventure Park, said in an interview.

According to Jacinto, many tourists cancelled their bookings with them due to surging fuel prices.

He, however, assured that their group rates for 4×4 rides at PHP2,500 and ATV rides at PHP700 for 20 minutes and PHP300 for a single route will not increase, helping to ease the burden for those who want to travel and enjoy the upcoming long weekend.

In Pagudpud town, the municipal government also announced that “same rates” will apply to accommodation facilities, restaurants, tours, and “kubo” (small cottage) rentals.

“We warmly invite you to come and experience the beauty of the northern paradise we proudly call home. Relax, unwind, and enjoy—without the extra cost,” the Pagudpud municipal government said in its official Facebook page.

In a statement, Ilocos Norte provincial tourism officer Aianree Raquel said they are expecting a lower turnout of visitors during the upcoming Holy Week season due to economic challenges.

He said this prompted the provincial government to reactivate the travel incentive program, offering one-way free tours to visitors in the province.

“We recognize that the oil price hikes have a major impact on transportation,” Raquel said, citing that the provincial government revived the travel incentive program, similar to during the pandemic, to encourage visitors to explore different places.

The route from Manila to Laoag provides a one-way free ticket, available on a first-come, first-served basis during Holy Week and the Day of Valor, both of which fall on long weekends. (PNA)
