The Lanao del Sur provincial government once again presented a new set of cultural exhibits featuring Maranao arts and crafts in Northern Mindanao

In a statement on Wednesday, Provincial Tourism Officer Ahmad Nouraldinn Tamano Jr. said the Okir Art Exhibit currently held in this city symbolizes more than just an artistic pattern of the Maranao people, as it also embodies resilience.

“This year, we brought even more artists. We brought langkit, the malong, woodcraft, and the visual arts that define our province,” he said.

First launched in 2024, the three-day exhibit, running from Feb. 3 to 5, is being hosted by the Provincial Tourism, Culture, and Arts Office at the SM Downtown Mall’s Event Hall.

It underscores the provincial government’s commitment to cultural preservation, artistic expression, and community resilience.

The exhibit features a series of activities, including art displays, cultural performances, live demonstrations by artists and artisans, lectures, partnership-building and networking sessions, and a press conference.

Organizers said the exhibit aims to empower local artists by providing a prominent venue to showcase their work, foster pride and recognition within the Maranao community, and encourage dialogue and appreciation of Okir art among residents and visitors.

It also seeks to promote Lanao del Sur as a cultural tourism destination by raising awareness of its distinct artistic traditions.

Beyond cultural promotion, the art exhibit is positioned as a strategic cultural and economic initiative that supports post-conflict recovery efforts in Marawi City.

By giving artisans access to broader markets, the program aligns the development of traditional craftsmanship with modern trade, tourism, and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. (PNA)
