Northern Mindanao is expected to maintain an abundant fish supply beyond the holiday season, with up to 50 tons potentially available daily by 2026, an industry leader said Friday.

Irene Floro, chairperson of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the city is a top regional market for marine products.

“We are ready to supply around 40 to 50 tons of fish per day this holiday season,” Floro said in an interview, adding that the Department of Trade and Industry monitors prices to prevent sharp increases.

Most tuna and marine products for the region come from Zamboanga and General Santos City, where harvests are abundant, Floro, who is also a fish wholesaler, said.

She noted high transportation and logistics costs challenge local traders, creating price competition from suppliers in Cebu and Manila despite Mindanao’s growing supply. (PNA)
