The provincial government of Ilocos Norte on Wednesday renewed its call for inclusivity, regardless of ability, as it reaffirmed its support to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

“We renew our commitment to building a province where every person, regardless of ability, can live with dignity, opportunity and respect,” Ilocos Norte Gov. Cecilia Araneta-Marcos said in her speech during a program marking the province’s observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Marcos emphasized that all programs and services of the provincial government aim to empower everybody, including PWDs, to thrive and participate fully in society.

Over the years, the provincial government has been funding and implementing projects and programs for PWDs, such as various skills and competencies training that enable them to become productive and independent.

In partnership with national government agencies, the provincial government also provides various livelihood assistance, including the distribution of PHP1,000 monthly pension to indigent PWDs.

It also distributes assistive devices like wheelchairs, walkers and crutches, enabling recipients to regain independence and access school, work and essential services.

“I thank the provincial government for seeing us with respect and for treating us with dignity,” said Samuel Corpuz, a resident of Laoag City with hearing impairment.

Wednesday’s event was spearheaded by the provincial government, through the Persons with Disability Affairs Office. It featured a slogan competition and a lecture on how PWDs can avail of various livelihood programs from the Department of Labor and Employment, among others.

Representatives from local government units in the province and various PWD communities also joined advocates on a march from the east side of the Ferdinand E. Marcos Sports Stadium all the way to the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena.

Officers and members of the Ilocos Norte Province Association of the Deaf, meanwhile, provided entertainment through a dance number.

“This celebration reflects our province’s full support to national efforts to foster unity, inclusion, and equal opportunities with genuine compassion and respect,” acting Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office head Rochelle Gajes said during the the program.

This year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities has the theme “Fostering Disability Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.” (PNA)
