About 700 residents of San Carlos City and Candoni town in Negros Occidental received PHP6.72 million in cash-for-work (CFW) aid after completing activities under the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Risk Resiliency Program-Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation.

Each beneficiary received PHP9,600 after completing the 20-day CFW as part of the rollout of the Project BINHI (Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest) and Project LAWA (Local Adaptation to Water Access), the DSWD-Western Visayas reported in Monday.

In San Carlos City, the 500 partner beneficiaries received the amount on June 19, along with the distribution of vegetable seedlings for planting at the designated BINHI site and fish fingerlings for the small farm reservoirs under Project LAWA.

Meanwhile, the 200 recipients in Candoni got the cash assistance on June 18, along with the distribution of vegetable seedlings.

After the turnover of projects and the payouts, local government officials and DSWD personnel conducted field monitoring visits to assess the progress and outcomes of the projects.

The CFW is a short-term intervention to provide temporary employment to individuals by participating in or undertaking productive work in their communities.

Under the Project LAWA, the DSWD focuses on enhancing water access and management in communities prone to drought and water shortages by constructing small farm reservoirs, repairing or rehabilitating water harvesting facilities, and diversifying water supplies, among others.

Project BINHI, on the other hand, aims to promote food security and nutrition among communities by facilitating the adoption of climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural practices such as planting of disaster-resilient crops, fruit-bearing trees and mangroves, and the like; communal and urban gardening; and vermicomposting.
