The local fishery industry in Marawi City is expected to experience a significant boom with the recent opening of the PHP261.5-million port, which President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visited on Monday.

In a statement, Sadiq Mohamad, director of Marawi City’s Project Management Office, said the new port facility will centralize fish catch, making it more accessible to the public, particularly near the passenger terminal building.

“We are looking at a fishing industry that will reach a certain level of production that will not only be used for local consumption but also be sold to other places,” he said.

The port project is a key component of the Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Peacebuilding Program. This initiative is led by the Office of the Presidential Adviser for Marawi Rehabilitation and Development, formerly known as Task Force Bangon Marawi, and was established in response to the extensive damage caused by the 2017 armed siege.

Aside from the physical inspection of the port, President Marcos also visited schools in the temporary learning sites in Barangay Sagonsongan, where he oversaw the distribution of satellite internet units and school supplies. (PNA)
