Collaborative efforts will lay a foundation for the Philippines’ progress and stability, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said Thursday, as he led the celebration of the 127th anniversary of the proclamation of the country’s independence.

“Through our collective efforts, we will forge the path of progress, stability, and prosperity for our present and future generations,” Marcos said in his message for the Independence Day commemoration.

Marcos called on his fellow Filipinos to honor the country’s forefathers by striving for excellence in preserving rights and freedoms “used solely for the improvement and protection of our citizenry.”

He also emphasized the need to protect the country from oppressors.

“So, let us continue to bear the vigor of our ancestors as we defend our nation against those who seek to diminish the strength of our people,” he said.

“In the spirit of patriotism, let us honor our priceless freedom by building a country worthy of the sacrifices made by our heroes. May you endeavor to enhance your abilities and character to give more to our nation.”

Marcos said the celebration of Philippine independence is “one of the proudest milestones” in the country’s history, the moment the Philippine flag was first unfurled in 1898 in Kawit, Cavite.

He acknowledged that the journey to freedom was “long, arduous, and costly, requiring the sacrifice of selfless individuals for over a century.”

“Because of their heroism, we now enjoy the rights and privileges reserved for those who have a country they can call their own,” Marcos said.

“The freedom our forebears fought for has inspired generations to offer themselves to causes that would advance the welfare of society and humanity. This precious gift has also encouraged countless individuals to dedicate their diligence and devotion to their respective fields for the glory of our great nation.”

Marcos will lead the nationwide commemoration in a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Park Monument in the City of Manila.

He will also join the Independence Day Parade at the Quirino Grandstand afterwards.

On Thursday afternoon, Marcos will host the Vin d’honneur (a French tradition meaning “wine of honor”) at Malacañang Palace in Manila, which will be attended by top government officials and members of the diplomatic corps. (PNA)
