The Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, a local political organization based here, said the city is well on its way to setting higher benchmarks in urban safety.

This came after the city was ranked as the second safest city in Southeast Asia based on Numbeo’s 2023 Southeast Asia Safety Index.

With a 7.2 safety index score, Davao City was just behind Chiang Mai City in Thailand, which clinched the top spot with 72.5, while Singapore City in Singapore was third with 70.8.

“This recognition places Davao City ahead of other major Southeast Asian cities known for their safety and livability. This highlights Davao City’s continued commitment to safety and security,” the group said in a late-night statement Tuesday.

The group said the city has long been recognized for its rigorous public safety measures, community policing programs, and efficient emergency response systems.

“This recognition adds to Davao City’s growing list of achievements and positions it as a model city for safety and security in the region. With its strong community spirit and effective governance,” it said.

Numbeo also included other cities in the Philippines in its list: Makati (6th place), Iloilo (8th place), and Quezon (19th place).

Amid its continuous efforts to provide residents with a safe city, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) reported that from January to May 2024, the overall number of crime incidents in the locality decreased by 3.93 percent compared to the same period last year.

Non-index crimes also decreased by 1.93 percent, while index crimes dropped by 28.4 percent, or 1,795 incidents.

“DCPO is committed to serving with utmost sincerity and dedication to ensure the safety and security of the city,” Col. Rolando Suguilon, the DCPO officer-in-charge, said. (PNA)
