The House Panel’s basic education and culture committee approved in principle House Bill 5520, ‘National Museum of Filipino Women Act’, in the 18th Congress Session this November.

Gabriela Representative Arlene Brosas authored HB 5520, which included appropriating funds for the Filipina Women’s Museum. Related House Bills such as HB 595, 6002, and 7478 were also passed.

According to Brosas in her sponsorship speech, it is only right to introduce Filipina heroes to the younger generation to strengthen the patriotic spirit.

“Dapat na maipakilala sa mga susunod na henerasyon ng kabataang Pilipino anf kabayanihan nina Gabriela Silang, Tandang Sora at marami pang kababaihan na lumaban sa kolonyal na pananakop ng dayuhan, at maitanim ang makabayang diwa para tumindig laban sa anumang porma ng interbensyong dayuhan,” Brosas said.

The four house bills must first be consolidated before final approval of the House Panel and presented before the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) to finally establish the Museum that has been proposed since the 13th Congress Session.

PCW was invited for the session but was not present; the House of Representatives was unable to receive any reply on their end, however, principal authors and supporters now have spare time to create a consolidated bill.

More than heroic Filipinas, there are women throughout history and the current times who deserve to be recognized for their notable contribution and for breaking the ‘Maria Clara’ stereotype.
