As the country kicks off its celebration of the 123rd anniversary of the Philippine civil service, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office Chairman Junie Cua hailed the role of public servants in nation building.

“Every need that we can think about, we can expect that there are government workers trying their best to address it. Nariyan rin ang mga kawani ng pamahalaan sa bawat sakuna, nangunguna sa frontline para itaguyod ang kapakanan natin (Government employees are there in every calamity, always in the frontlines to promote our welfare),” Cua said in a statement on Tuesday.

“From our communities, through barangay workers, to the national level, the work of nation-building would not advance without public employees,” he said.

The Philippine civil service anniversary is observed every September. The civil service was created on Sept. 19, 1900 by virtue of Public Law No. 5 (An Act for the Establishment and Maintenance of an Efficient and Honest Civil Service in the Philippine Islands).

The Civil Service Commission introduced a 10-year overarching theme in 2021 – Transforming Public Service in the Next Decade: Honing Agile and Future-Ready Servant-Heroes – which reflects the collective experience of the government workforce in the new normal, and in pushing for digital transformation and innovations to uphold public service excellence and continuity.

Cua said he fully supports the need to continue to strive in transforming public service, especially amid the challenges presented by climate change and the opportunities presented by digitalization.

“We in government should be initiators of change – wherever and whenever possible, we must introduce innovations to improve our service delivery,” he said.

It is for this reason, he said, that the PCSO also continues to look for ways to improve its services, taking to heart President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive for the agency to continue improving how it serves the people.

“Kaya nagsusumikap din tayo na maging mas efficient at effective ang aming mga proseso para sa taumbayan. Kasama na rito ang pag-digitalize ng mga request for assistance at iba pang serbisyo ng PCSO (That is why we also continue to be more efficient and effective in our processes for the people. These include the digitalization of requests for assistance, as well as other services of the PCSO),” Cua said. (PNA)
