Asingan town is distributing 7,600 vegetable seed packs and seedlings to public schools to promote backyard gardening, and sustainable and healthy food production.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, municipal agriculturist Minerva Rosas said they have been promoting the project for the last 18 years due to its effectiveness.

“We have already distributed to the households and now we are currently distributing to the schools,” she said.

She said backyard gardening ensures that the residents will have a sustainable source of vegetables and even provide them extra income.

“This will also teach children the value of growing their own vegetables,” she said.

Asingan has 28 public schools that are recipients of the project with each school receiving seeds or seedlings of kangkong, pechay, string beans, okra, eggplant, squash and chili from the Department of Agriculture.

Rosas said they also have competitions to further encourage residents to go into backyard gardening such as the Gulayan sa Paaralan and the communal garden contest for the beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development. (PNA)
