A Davao del Sur bakeshop assisted by the Department of Science and Technology in the Davao Region (DOST-11) has been recognized as the most outstanding small enterprise in the region.

“Congratulations to Prangel’s Bakeshoppe for exemplifying how research, development, and innovation can help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs),” Dr. Anthony Sales, DOST-11 director, said in a statement Tuesday.

The recognition, which came from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), said the award handed out late last month was based on the firm’s product competitiveness, enterprise development, resiliency, pandemic alleviation initiatives, and community involvement.

From a small-scale business, Prangel’s Bakeshoppe has grown to become a landmark destination for locals and tourists passing through Davao del Sur.

The store, which specializes in various pastry products, has been assisted by DOST-11 through experts and consultants to help it increase market competitiveness in terms of price and quality.

According to DOST-11, the bakery business is a recipient of innovation funding assistance under the DOST’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program.

The program enabled the bakeshop to upgrade its production using cookies and cake depositors, improving its efficiency and increasing product quality.

The agency also provided various science and technology interventions, including the manufacturing productivity extension program, plant layout consultancy, and the vertical helophyte filter system installation, among others.

Meanwhile, the DTI in Davao Region said Tuesday the number of MSMEs has been growing despite the challenges brought by the pandemic.

DTI-11 Regional Director Maria Belenda Ambi said a total of 16,232 MSMEs have been assisted during the first half of 2022. (PNA)
