The Bureau of Customs (BOC) donated over 5,000 gadgets to the Department of Education (DepEd) for the online learning of students.

Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero personally turned over the 5,038 devices to DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones during a ceremony held at the Bureau’s Situation Room in Manila on Friday.

In a statement on Saturday, the BOC said the items are composed of Oppo A9 and A31 mobile phones as well as Huawei Mate mobile devices.

The gadgets were part of the seized items of the Port of Clark which were transported out of Clark Freeport Zone.

Through the provisions of Republic Act 10863 also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) and with the approval of Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III, the donation is for the benefit of students affected by the coronavirus pandemic and allow better implementation of DepEd’s online learning program.

Dominguez was virtually present during the turnover ceremony which was also attended by deputy commissioners and representatives of the Port of Clark led by district collector Ruby Claudia Alameda.

In her remarks, Briones thanked the BOC and the Finance department for their continuing support to DepEd in promoting quality education.

Dominguez, meanwhile, commended the men and women of the BOC for their unrelenting efforts to perform their functions as well as initiatives to collaborate with other agencies to better serve the Filipinos. (PNA)
