Valentine’s Day Celebrated Behind Bars In Iloilo

Jail bars cannot stop the spread of love this Valentine’s Day.

For the first time, Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) at the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ) Female Dormitory in Barangay Nanga, Pototan enjoyed a Valentine’s Day program, the dormitory’s jail warden, Insp. Imee Lopera, said Thursday.

Seven pairs took part in a singing contest dubbed as the “Sweetheart Duo”, where PDLs unleashed their talent for singing love songs.

The contestants were judged based on voice quality, proper blending, and audience impact.

The pair who sang “I Finally Found Someone” by Barbra Streisand and Bryan Adams emerged as champion.
The winners were given cash awards, Lopera said in an interview.

“The bars cannot hinder our PDLs from showing love this Valentine’s Day because love does not only happen between two persons but also between friends and family,” she said.

To strengthen the camaraderie and spirit of togetherness, the PDLs gathered for a boodle fight after the singing contest.

Some of the female PDLs also received Valentine’s cards, flowers, and chocolates from their husbands detained at the IDJ Male Dormitory.

As much as the IDJ wanted the PDLs to also spend Valentine’s time with their family outside the prison bars, Lopera said the regular visiting hours were still followed.

“We had our visiting hours from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, and then from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.,” she said.

The IDJ female dormitory currently holds 154 PDLs. (PNA)
