For the groups of punters and performers that visit Edinburgh, Scotland every year, this festival serves as the greatest platform for creative freedom—the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Commonly referred to as “The Fringe,” this festival has been an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival since 1947, bringing together performers to showcase over 50,000 unique presentations and approximately 3,000 shows in hundreds of venues.
It is held annually every month of August in a span of 25 days.
The Fringe is unique among other festivals as it doesn’t require any selection committee. Meaning to say, anyone who’s willing to join can also participate regardless of what performance they have as long as it’s under categories theater, comedy, dance, physical theater, circus, cabaret, children’s shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.
Moreover, the largest section which has the highest public profile today is comedy, having Edinburgh Comedy Awards.
Various shows and performances are not only presented in Traverse Theater and Cabaret Voltaire but also in public places such as public parks or even public vehicles. The Fringe is conducted all over the city, supported by the Festival Fringe Society that publishes the program by selling tickets and offering year-round advice and support to performers.
