The city council here endorsed on Tuesday the proposed PHP21.8-million Tacloban urban bike lane project for funding by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

The council approved in a special session the proposed urban bike lane, which starts from the city hall ground to the City Astrodome and goes to the northern villages, city engineering office chief Dionisio de Paz told reporters in an interview.

The proposed Tacloban urban bike lane will cover a total of 28 kilometers from the city downtown area to the astrodome, then to the park near a relocation site in the northern part of the city.

Before bringing the proposal to the city council, the plan has been discussed with five groups of bikers, de Paz said.

Included in the proposal is the construction of a waiting shed, bike parking area, and structures that will separate motorists to bikers, and bike lanes in a road designated as one-way street.

Protective equipment will be installed, such as structural barriers, to protect the bikers traversing bike lanes along national highways.

“We have structures that will separate vehicles from bike lane. There are also areas where we will use paint as markings,” de Paz said.

Motorcycles and other motorized vehicles are not allowed to use the bike lane, he added. (PNA)
