Some six thousand individuals from the vulnerable sectors in nine local government units (LGUs) in the provinces of Iloilo and Antique are recipients of the cash-for-work program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 6 (Western Visayas).
The recipients of the Risk Resiliency Program Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (RRPCCAM), which has a funding of PHP16.425 million, were chosen through cross-matching done at the local government level.
The nine LGUs are Tubungan and Igbaras in Iloilo and Anini-y, Hamtic, Tobias Fornier, Patnongon, San Remigio, Sibalom, and Valderrama of Antique.
“We overlay the hazard map and prioritized those that are in (the) red to be served this first quarter. They are landslide-prone areas or are experiencing sea level rise,” DSWD-6 Focal Person for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, Maurice John Caban, said in an interview Friday.
Households that have not yet received interventions from the DSWD, such as the cash-for-work, families living in hazard areas and those considered as part of the vulnerable sector, are prioritized in the selection.
They will be assigned to help rehabilitate barangay roads or projects that are attached to their Local Climate Change Action Plan (LCCAP), he said.
They will be paid 70 percent of the regional prevailing wage of PHP273.75 for 10 days.
In a phone interview Thursday, Luna Moscoso, chief of the Disaster Response Management of DSWD-6, said they are now gathering the proposals of recipient LGUs so they can already start next week.
“This is one of the programs in the prevention and mitigation of disasters,” she explained.
Moscoso recalled that last year, they also implemented the program in 29 municipalities affected by the major river basin or the Jalaur and Batiano Rivers. The recipient towns were from Antique, Capiz and Iloilo benefitting some 31,607 individuals.
Luna said that they are not yet sure if there would be additional LGUs because they are dependent on their central office.
“But actually it is one of the directions of the government, which is geared towards climate change reduction,” she added. (PNA)
