Preserve Boracay!—this is what the locals of Boracay is asking for. Every now and then, property owners, businessmen and developers have been pushing to revoke the beauty of Boracay making it into commercial lands for what they call ‘development’. And just yesterday, the facebook page ‘Protect Boracay’, a community who aims to protect and conserve the beauty of the island since it had been degraded because of the island’s rapid unsustainable development, posted a photo showing the present image and situation of Puka Beach.
Puka Beach is popular for its fine white sand and proximity. It is named after the abundance of ‘Puka’ shells which can be found around its area. However, the eyeful sight of it has undergone some significant changes and it is slowly being turned to beachfront resort and hotels.
Because of this, ‘Protect Boracay’ posted the photo of Puka Beach’s current situation to make a noise calling for help from the Local Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Department of Tourisim. Some are complaining that the project can affect the wildlife. Some says the project might spoil the supposedly natural feeling of Puka Beach as it is not surrounded with numerous resorts and hotels. And most are on fret as it can affect their life and livelihood.
According to them, DENR and DoT will be making rounds and inspection on the area of Puka Beach, but admins are still not complacent as they are on a wary that these government agencies would just make a publicity stunt. Despite of the said actions that will be made, this wouldn’t stop the netizens from commenting to what they say ‘irresponsible and lack of actions’ from the local and national government.
